Income Trust Trader

...for capital gains with a side of income!

SPECIAL NOTE TO FIRST-TIME VISITORS: If you arrived here due to Ellen Roseman’s generous recommendation in the Toronto Star (Sunday, August 3, 2008), she didn’t quite get the web site address correct. What she describes is our original and most-popular web site... TSX TrendWatch Weekly. We think that is a better place to get familiar with our work, especially through the Visitor Guide that you’ll find there. This site is more focussed on one specific investment vehicle, income trusts.  We also have one focussed solely on exchange traded funds (ETFs), called Canadian ETF Review. We hope you’ll eventually take advantage of all of them.   ...cpw

Welcome to Charles P. Whaley’s Income Trust Trader. Our goal is to provide you with our unique relative trend analysis™ of Canadian Income Trusts and to keep you abreast of income trust news and strategies.

Our Visitor Guide is a must-read document. You won’t know what’s going on here unless you read it and read it well.

Both before and after our finance minister decided that income trusts were not good for us, we’ve always traded them for capital gain and not for income. If you can’t relate to that perspective, this site is not for you.

I know this runs contrary to conventional wisdom, but we believe that income trusts are best held and traded by aggressive investors seeking capital gains, and not by conservative investors seeking income. The income portion may still run higher than other investment alternatives, but the risks are too high for ”widows and orphans” trying to preserve their capital.

Many learned that the hard way through a horrible Halloween prank perpretrated by one Mr. Flaherty... a finance minister no less, who should have some intelligence and enough insight to realize the consequences of his actions. Apparently, we were wrong on both counts!

Hence, our slogan “...for capital gains with a side of income!” We’re after the steak, and the monthly distributions are a side-order of gravy (to offset trading costs).

If you can handle that, you’ve come to the right place. Once you’ve mastered the Visitor Guide, your regular visits should include the Trust Talk blog and the DATA & CHARTS workbook.

Additional features (accessible by navigation buttons) are forthcoming... mainly references to other materials... books and articles, other useful sites, more in depth data for power users and the latest news on income trusts.
